Free-agent NFL TE discovers cancer after taking routine physical

Foster Moreau, who previously played with the Los Angeles Raiders, got some devastating news following a physical exam conducted by the New Orleans Saints’ medical staff.

The 25-year-old free agent was diagnosed with a type of cancer known as Hodgkin’s lymphoma (previously called Hodgkin’s disease). He had also visited with the Cincinnati Bengals before learning of the diagnosis, ESPN reported.

“Through somewhat of a miraculous process, this Free Agency period has been life changing for me,” Moreau wrote on Twitter. “During a routine physical conducted by the Saint’s medical team down in New Orleans, I’ve come to learn that I have Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and will be stepping away from football at this time to fight a new opponent: Cancer.”

“I’m grateful for the support and thankful for the people who have stood firm with me,” Moreau continued. “There hasn’t been a single step I’ve taken without hundreds of people lighting the path before me and I will continue to seek their guidance.”

“That being said, I’ll go kick this thing’s ass and get back to doing what I love! AMDG!” Moreau added.

Moreau’s College and NFL stats

Foster Moreau played tight end with the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders from 2019-2022. He was a fourth-round pick in 2019 after playing in college for LSU (2015-2018).

Last season, Moreau played in 15 games and recorded career-highs of 33 catches and 420 receiving yards while adding two touchdowns. For career stats, Moreau has a total of 91 receptions for 1,107 yards and 12 touchdowns.

During college with the LSU Tigers, Moreau made 52 receptions for 629 yards and six touchdowns and was invited to the 2019 Senior Bowl, according to the Bleacher Report.

What is Hodgkin’s lymphoma?

Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer affecting the lymphatic system in which white blood cells, lymphocytes, grow out of control, causing swollen lymph nodes and growths throughout the body, according to the Mayo Clinic. The lymphatic system is complementary to the circulatory system and is the body’s germ-fighting immune system, consisting of a large network of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymphatic organs, and lymphoid tissues.

Advances in diagnosis and treatment have helped give people an improved prognosis and a chance for a full recovery.
