Mitch McConnell Hospitalized After Fall

Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader and a prominent member of the Republican Party, has been hospitalized following a fall at a hotel in Washington on Wednesday evening.

“He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment,” McConnell’s spokesperson, David Popp, told reporters. “The leader is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes.” McConnell reportedly suffered a concussion following the fall down the stairs at the Washington hotel, resulting in a speedy trip to the emergency room.

Biden Administration Sends Well-Wishes

The Kentucky senator has been extremely controversial for his policies, which delight Republicans on the national stage and infuriate Democrats. Despite McConnell’s controversial voting record and status as a prominent political opponent, many members of the Biden Administration issued him well-wishes Thursday. President Joe Biden, who had a well-documented and long-standing friendship with McConnell, offered words of support.

“I’ve spoken to his family,” Biden said recently. “I think he’s going to be all right.” Later, the president tweeted, “Jill and I are wishing Senator McConnell a speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing him back on the Senate floor.”

Other Politicians Reach Out

McConnell’s longtime nemesis, Chuck Schumer, also offered the Minority Leader words of encouragement. “I join every single one of my colleagues in wishing Leader McConnell a speedy and full recovery,” Schumer told senators in the Capitol on Thursday. Numerous other senators and politicians echoed this sentiment, with many coming from both sides of the aisle to wish him a speedy recovery.

Democratic Senator Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico also remarked that McConnell was the first senator to reach out to him following his stroke. “I’m wishing him a full and speedy recovery,” Luján tweeted, highlighting their friendship.

McConnell’s Health

McConnell’s health has been a notable topic of interest for years now. Back in 2019, the senator took a fall at his home in Kentucky that resulted in a broken shoulder. McConnell served as the Senate Majority Leader from 2015 to 2021. During that time, he oversaw a historic number of Supreme Court appointments for the Republican majority.
