Kellyanne and George Conway announce split

The pairing of Kellyanne and George Conway has always baffled observers, being political enemies: with her defending Donald Trump, and him as one of the former president’s most outstanding critics. The pair say they’re divorcing.

Kellyanne and George Conway are divorcing

Based on their strongly differing political opinions, Kellyanne Conway and George Conway have often baffled observers as a real-life version of “The Odd Couple.” And now, after 22 years of marriage, the couple is divorcing.

The couple publicly announced their plans to divorce in a joint statement posted to Twitter, titled “Statement by George and Kellyanne Conway.”

“We are in the final stages of an amicable divorce,” the statement began. “We married more than two decades ago, cherish the many happy years (and four corgis) we’ve shared, and above all else, our four incredible children, who remain the heartbeat of our family and our top priority.”

“Kindly respect our privacy,” the statement continued. “We appreciate the many family members, friends and colleagues who know us, care for us, and support us.”

“We remain united as parents to provide love, joy, comfort and protection to our beautiful children,” the statement concluded.

A fiery relationship played out in public

The differing views between Kellyanne Conway, a then-advisor to former President Donald Trump, and her husband George Conway, a Harvard- and Yale-educated lawyer and activist, played out strongly on nightly news broadcasts and media reports.

As BuzzFeed reports, considered a power couple, their political disagreements played out in the public eye, sometimes involving pronounced hostility to one another.

While his wife was still working for the then-president, George Conway harshly and repeatedly criticized the Trump administration, CNN reports.

Kellyanne Conway, also an attorney, received her JD at George Washington University. She served as senior counselor to the president, having previously served as Trump’s campaign manager. She was the first woman to run a successful US presidential campaign.

At one time, George Conway was under consideration by President Donald Trump for a number of positions, including Solicitor General of the United States, and a post as an assistant attorney general heading the Civil Division at the United States Department of Justice.

In a 2022 interview with CNN, Kellyanne said that she and her husband had decided to move together with their four children to Washington to work for the Trump administration. However, once they were settled in, George “changed his mind about Donald Trump somewhere along the way.”

During the 2020 presidential election, Conway got involved with the Lincoln Project, a coalition of former Republicans dedicated to defeating Trump.

Kellyanne: “The man who had always had my back might one day stab me in it”

Their squabbles were far from unnoticed. In 2018, they were described as “a house divided” by the Washington Post. In 2019, Quartz labeled their behavior as “a lesson in what not to do.”

Kellyanne Conway wrote a memoir in 2022 entitled “Here’s the Deal,” in which she discussed some of the conflicts in her marriage. This includes when she discovered George’s tweets about Trump for the first time, saying, “my husband George abandoned me for Twitter.”

“For the first time since George and I had gotten serious, I was looking at the possibility that the man who had always had my back might one day stab me in it,” Kellyanne wrote in her memoir, according to the New York Post.
