You’ve been playing Monopoly all wrong! Forgotten rule is major game-changer

People are shocked by this overlooked and forgotten Monopoly rule that dramatically alters the way the game is played. Fans say playing Monopoly the “correct” way is far better.

We’ve all been playing Monopoly wrong!

Don’t pass Go without learning the rules.

Most of us are unaware that we’ve been playing the game of Monopoly all wrong. It seems to be the case that most people somehow overlooked this forgotten rule about how it is supposed to be played.

Likely, this error in play is the result of one person quickly teaching the rules to another. Most people don’t actually read the instructions to learn how to play the game. Instead, they learn by being “coached” by someone else, often picking up the rules as they go along while actively playing the game.

This week, this “forgotten rule” revelation went viral on Twitter when a 2017 post from a user named Ruben from @RubenFanDuel TV recirculated, with The Daily Mail also reporting on the story.

According to the Mail, the game of Monopoly was originally designed to warn players about the dangers of capitalism. Instead, people play the game as a way of vicariously celebrating the feeling of getting rich.

The Monopoly rule that everyone has forgotten and what it does

It pays to read the instructions.

The way most people play Monopoly, as you are cruising around the game board and you land on a property that no one owns and you don’t want to buy – you just move along.

But that’s not allowed according to the official rules of Monopoly.

The rules state that if someone lands on a property and does not purchase it – the property goes to auction for ANY player to buy.

The property must be auctioned off by the banker, and the other players can make bids on it.

Here is what the official Monopoly rules say about buying property:

“Whenever you land on an unowned property you may buy that property from the Bank at its printed price. You receive the Title Deed card showing ownership; place it face up in front of you.

“If you do not wish to buy the property, the Banker sells it at auction to the highest bidder. The buyer pays the Bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property. Any player, including the one who declined the option to buy it at the printed price, may bid. Bidding may start at any price.”

Fans have admitted playing the game using this actual and forgotten rule has made the game much better. Give it a try and see what you think!
