The Largest Cage-Free, No-Kill Dog Rescue in the US Opens in Alabama

A massive 100-acre cage-free, no-kill dog rescue facility will be opening in Alabama. It is slated to be the largest of its kind in the United States, which will rescue, rehabilitate and adopt dogs across the South.

Massive ranch will rescue, rehabilitate, and ready dogs for adoption

Sitting on 100 acres, officials in Alabama announced the future opening of the Big Dog Ranch Rescue, a cage-free and no-kill facility that will serve as a rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption center for neglected and abused dogs across the South, WSFA reported.

The ranch sits on the former home of a Greyhound training facility in Macon County, Alabama, and is now considered to be the largest cage-free facility in the United States.

Several of the structures on the Alabama property are undergoing renovation before it makes its grand opening. Although it is a cage-free facility, it will have sixteen kennels and several other structures necessary for providing proper care for the dogs.

“The expansion will allow us to double our impact in saving last-day dogs from euthanasia by increasing our capacity to a facility where our rescue efforts are desperately needed,” said Lauree Simmons, Founder and CEO of Big Dog Ranch Rescue. “Together, we can make a difference in ending dog homelessness and saving more lives with the help of Shorter, Alabama’s resourceful community.”

Big dog Ranch has saved 50,000 dogs in Florida

Big Dog Ranch Rescue has another world-class, cage-free, no-kill facility in Palm Beach County, Florida, that sits on 33 acres and features a state-of-the-art veterinary clinic.

The Alabama facility will serve as a sister site to its Florida location.

The organization claims it has saved the lives of over 50,000 abandoned and homeless dogs, saying the group doesn’t only heal the dogs medically, but mentally.

On the organization’s website, a graphic explains that the group takes in and rescues dogs from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. After rehabilitation, some of the dogs are transported to empty shelters in the Northeast in New York, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.

Ukraine rescue mission

Big Dog Ranch Rescue is also operating a Ukrainian rescue mission, trying to save abandoned dogs in Ukraine. They have opened a temporary Border Shelter in Poznan, Poland, where they are coordinating transports of both Ukrainians and abandoned dogs that have been left behind in bombed-out cities. The group says they have receiving partners in Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.
