Royal jewels drama: which tiara will Camilla wear to coronation?

There has been a lot of speculation over which tiara the Queen Consort of the UK, Camilla, will wear at the May 6 coronation of her husband King Charles III. Finally, we have an answer – but it’s not what people expected.

Royal jewels: Which tiara will Camilla wear at the King’s coronation?

The royal family is preparing for a rare, once-in-each-generation event: the crowning of a new king. On May 6, 2023, Charles, Prince of Wales, will be crowned King Charles III.

Charles, the heir apparent, became the oldest person to accede to the British throne following the death of his mother, Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022. Elizabeth’s reign was the longest of any British monarch, at 70 years and 214 days, as well as the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.

Charles’ wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and legally the Princess of Wales, now becomes the Queen consort. With that, the burning question on everyone’s mind is: What tiara will be placed on Queen Camilla’s head when she is crowned alongside King Charles III?

Traditionally, a new commission is made to create a crown for the Queen Consort specifically for the coronation. This has been the case for the last 300 years, Brides reports.

But news has been released from Buckingham Palace that indicates Camilla is about to make history by not having a new tiara commissioned.

So, what tiara will Camilla wear?

The tiara Camilla will wear to the coronation is…

Originally, reports circulated that Camilla would be reusing a previous selection from the family’s jewelry vault by wearing the Queen Mother’s platinum crown, which contains a rare diamond called the Koh-i-Noor, Cosmopolitan reported.

Reportedly, there were closed-door discussions, and it was decided that having the Koh-i-Noor on display could create some significant upset given its controversial history.

Last week, Buckingham palace announced that, rather than have a new tiara commissioned, Camilla has decided she will wear the historic Royal heirloom known as Queen Mary’s Crown, People reported.

Queen Mary’s Crown is set with 2,200 diamonds, and was last worn by Queen Mary when she was part of the coronation of her husband, King George V, in 1911.

Buckingham palace said it made the decision “in the interests of sustainability and efficiency.”

However, Queen Mary’s Crown will receive some modifications. It will be reworked to include stones from the late Queen Elizabeth’s personal collection. Queen Mary’s Crown has been removed from display at the Tower of London for modification work ahead of the Coronation.

It has been 300 years since a Queen consort’s crown was reused, going all the way back to the 18th century when Queen Caroline, consort of George II, wore Mary of Modena’s crown.
