No more Netflix password sharing – what you need to know

In case you weren’t aware, Netflix has been cracking down on password sharing and has now expanded this ban to other countries. Additional users outside a household can be added for a fee. Here’s what you need to know.

Netflix clamps down on password sharing

Netflix has put an end to password sharing in 2023. A clampdown began last year, as Netflix methodically rolled out country-by-country crackdowns, not allowing sharing to people outside a given household.

You will no longer be able to share your Netflix account with someone who doesn’t live in your same household.

According to Netflix’s help page: “A Netflix account is meant to be shared in one household (people who live in the same location with the account owner). People who are not in your household will need to sign up for their own account to watch Netflix.”

New rules: The basics

One of the most important new changes users should be aware of is that Netflix now requires you to set a primary location for your account.

The good news is that if you have been sharing your account with someone, Netflix isn’t going to ban or drop your account. However, those users that are not coming from the primary location will either have to pay for access or get their own account.

Under Netflix’s latest sharing updates, members on a standard or premium plan in many countries can add an extra member subaccount for up to two people they don’t live with – for an extra fee.

People who have been sharing an account now can transfer their information to a new account they pay for and be able to keep their personalized recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and more.

Netflix and traveling

Paid members will still be able to watch Netflix on their personal devices or log in to a new TV from a hotel or holiday rental. You’ll have to enter a four-digit code sent to the account owner’s email or phone within a 15-minute expiration window.

Registering and re-verifying your devices

Netflix has launched a new “manage account access and devices” page where users register their devices.

But Netflix has also established some rules outside of the US (Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru), where users are required to verify their home devices every month. Devices outside of their home will be blocked, the Anchorage daily news reported.
