An image showing a man with the world’s longest nose has gone viral this week as people are having a hard time believing it’s real. But not only has Guinness World Records confirmed its authenticity, but the repository of unusual facts also says this record for a human with the longest proboscis still stands.

In the 18th century, a man named Thomas Wedders, from Yorkshire, England gained fame for having the world’s longest nose which measured a whopping 7.5-inches.

Wedders’ worldwide recognition came as he showed off his lengthy beak as a member of a traveling circus, the Daily Mail reported.

A visage of Thomas Wedders and his unusual-yet-incredible snout was preserved as a wax figure in a Ripley’s Believe It or Not exhibit, an image of which went viral this week after first being shared on Reddit and throughout the Internet.

Current living record holder for the world’s largest nose

According to Guinness, the world’s longest nose on a still-living human male belongs to Mehmet Özyürek (Turkey), of Artvin, Turkey. Guinness World Records verified his measurement of 3.46-inches (8.80 cm) on 13 November 2021.

“I am very happy with my nose, and I don’t have any intention to change it,” Mehmet told Guinness World Records. I always had a feeling I was going to go places and be someone because of my nose.”

History’s other famous noses

French novelist and playwright Cyrano de Bergerac is famed for having a honker of a schnoz, which in the eponymous play by Edmond Rostand, and the body part causes him self-doubt and fear that Roxane, the woman he loves, will reject him over it.

Next is the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) or long-nosed monkey, which is named for its large nose, which can exceed 4 inches in length and even hang lower than its mouth.

Performer Jimmy Durante was often self-deprecating about his nose calling it his schnozzola, and it became his nickname. Reportedly, a makeup man named John Chambers measured Durante’s nose with calipers and a ruler, and it registered 77 millimeters from bridge to tip, or about three inches, according to the Washington Post.
