Listeria: recalled salads could be tainted

The USDA has issued a public health alert and issued a recall for more than a dozen FDA-regulated salads and salad kits sold at multiple retailers in six states over concerns of possible listeria contamination.

US food authorities recall salads over possible Listeria contamination

More than a dozen salads and salad kits that are sold by multiple retailers in six states have been recalled over possible contamination with listeria, although no illnesses have been reported.

The products were packaged under the Revolution Farms brand name and were sold in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Consumers are instructed to discard the products or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, The Hill reported.

The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert for ready-to-eat (RTD) fresh salad products with chicken and ham, which contain Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulated lettuce that has been recalled for possible contamination with listeria (Listeria monocytogenes [Lm]), according to an FSIS bulletin.

About listeria infections

Typical symptoms are fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

However, Food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected.
