Johnny Mathis’ Hollywood Hills mansion has hillside collapse, crushes Jaguar

After a series of powerful storms drenched Southern California, a hillside in front of the Hollywood Hills mansion of legendary singer Johnny Mathis collapsed, crushing and burying a beautiful silver Jaguar sports car.

Storms wreak havoc on Southern California

After extended, heavy storms tore through Southern California, drenching and inundating the area with more water than it could handle, hillsides began to collapse. That’s what happened at the mansion of “Chances Are” crooner Johnny Mathis.

The landslide came rolling down on the Hollywood Hills property belonging to Mathis, cutting off the utilities and leaving pipes and other infrastructure exposed in the 1400 block of Sunset Plaza, ABC reported.

Parked next to the sloping patch of land was a silver Jaguar. The luxury car was buried under mud and debris and buried as the hillside eroded and came rolling down. ABC 7 posted a video of the crushed car.

It was unclear how much damage had occurred to the home, a spokesperson for Mathis said, adding on a bright note: “As much as the slide was very concerning, no one was injured.”

It was also unclear how stable the hill remained.

“Once a City permit is issued, the dirt and debris will be safely moved and repair work can commence,” representatives for Mathis told PEOPLE. “Thus far, the full extent of the damage has yet to be determined and is currently being evaluated.”

Jaguar NOT Johnny’s

A representative from Mathis clarified inaccurate media reports that said it was Mathis’ silver Jaguar that was crushed, People reported. The rep said the vehicle did not belong to Johnny but is “the car of a very nice neighbor of his.”

Mudslide was second disastrous incident at Mathis’ home in 7 years

This was not the first incident to befall Mathis’ property in the Sunset Plaza area of the Hollywood Hills.

A little more than seven years earlier, the exact same property was decimated by a fire in November 2015. Almost all of Mathis’ belongings were destroyed except for a few mementos, the Daily Mail reported.

In that incident, more than 40 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. According to the comments from a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson at the time, the roof caved in and there was “nothing left” of the house, which was “absolutely totaled.”

No one was injured in the fire, and Mathis was away playing a show in Cleveland when the fire broke out.

“Nobody got hurt,” Mathis told the Associated Press at the time. “That’s always important. We can always replace things.”
