Choco Taco Discontinuation Causes Meltdown, Some Fans Think It’s a Hoax

A major meltdown in the ice cream world this week as Klondike announces the discontinuation of its beloved frozen vanilla dessert the Choco Taco. Now diehard fans have a conspiracy theory that it’s a hoax.

The Choco Taco is discontinued and fans have a meltdown

The Choco Taco, which has been around since the early 1980s, is being discontinued by Klondike. The move has caused a major meltdown among fans of the vanilla ice cream treat in a taco-shaped cone.

What’s a Choco Taco?

If you’re uninformed about what a Choco Taco is–or rather, what it used to be–it’s a waffle cone that is shaped like a folded tortilla, filled with vanilla ice cream, and topped with chocolate and nuts.

The maker of the iconic Choco Taco is Klondike, which is owned by Unilever. The company confirmed on Monday that it is discontinuing the ice cream treat in both one-count and four-count packs.

What’s the reason for the discontinuation?

It seems that changes in demand for Klondike products has forced the company to make some decisions toward reducing their product line in order to better serve their customers and ensure the supply of their more popular frozen desserts.

“Over the past 2 years, we have experienced an unprecedented spike in demand across our portfolio and have had to make very tough decisions to ensure availability of our full portfolio nationwide,” a Klondike Brand representative told CNN Business, adding, “[W]e know this may be very disappointing.”

Fans meltdown online

“Choco Taco has fallen,” a user on Twitter declared.

“They always take the best things away from us,” another user lamented.

The company responded on Twitter but it didn’t pacify customers.

“A necessary but unfortunate part of this process is that we sometimes must discontinue products, even a beloved item like Choco Taco,” the company wrote.

“We know this may be very disappointing, and hope you’ll try our other delicious frozen treats,” Klondike wrote in another tweet, linking to their website.

Many others berated Klondike for the decision.

“WHAT… just WHAT are you thinking DISCONTINUING THE CHOCOTACO?” another fan wrote.

“Why, the Choco Taco was perfection?” another begged to know.

“The America we know and love is falling apart,” another fan mused.

Is the discontinuation of the Choco Taco a promotional hoax?

Some fans of the Choco Taco claim the delicious treat isn’t going anywhere, and that’s led to a number of conspiracy theories and perhaps wishful thinking.

Several online fans alleged the discontinuation is just a marketing ploy to drive up demand and that the treat will be reintroduced, perhaps in as soon as a month, while others said six months, the New York Post reported.

Fans compared it to Taco Bell bringing back its Mexican Pizza earlier this year after it was dropped off the menu in 2020.

The speculation comes after Klondike wrote on Twitter: “We’re working hard to find a way to bring Choco Taco back to ice cream trucks in the coming years.”

Still another theory is that the company discontinued the Choco Taco to reinvent the product.

“The remastered Choco Taco will be somehow worse,” one fan speculated.
