Alec Baldwin sued by family of Halyna Hutchins

Alec Baldwin has been sued in a new lawsuit by the family of Halyna Hutchins, a Ukrainian-born cinematographer who died on the set of “Rust” in 2021 after being shot with what was believed to be an unloaded prop gun.

Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter in January.

Representing the family in the lawsuit is famed producer Gloria Allred, who filed on their behalf in Los Angeles Superior Court on February 9. The complaints named in the suit include negligence, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and loss of consortium, CNBC reported.

In addition to Baldwin, the family of Hutchins is also suing the film’s various producers, USA Today reported.

Attorney Gloria Allred said the lawsuit is aimed at recovering compensation for the three family members, all of whom are in war-torn Ukraine, and relied on Hutchins for financial support.

Allred said Baldwin has not reached out to Hutchins’ family since she was killed.

“We haven’t heard from Alec Baldwin, the man with the gun,” Allred said during a press conference after filing the lawsuit.

The family is “devastated by the shocking killing” of Hutchins and believes “anyone responsible for her loss must be held accountable,” Allred said. “They won’t be able to enjoy life in the same way. Halyna was the light in their lives.”

Hutchins’ family were not present because they live in Ukraine, and according to Allred’s co-counsel, they “are fighting the fight” on the front lines of the war.

Other lawsuits against Baldwin and film’s crew

The incident on the Rust movie set occurred on October 21, 2021, as Baldwin practiced drawing a gun from his holster. The gun fired, and a round from the revolver pierced the shoulder of the film’s director, Joel Souza, and struck Hutchins in the chest.

Baldwin will not be charged with the injury to Souza.

Alec Baldwin, as well as the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, were both charged with involuntary manslaughter on January 19 by the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office, the Daily Mail reported. They both face a maximum of 18 months in prison. However, if a firearm enhancement is added to the charge, both face a mandatory five-year prison sentence.

The film’s assistant director, Dave Halls, has pleaded guilty to the charge of the negligent use of a deadly weapon.
