85-year-old woman dies defending dog from alligator

An 85-year-old woman was walking her small dog alongside a Florida pond and found herself face to face with a monster. She was killed trying to save her pet after it was snatched by an alligator. The reptile ultimately pulled the woman in the water. The dog survived.

Alligator attacks dog as woman walks by community pond

An 85-year-old woman, who lives in Fort Pierce, Florida, was walking her small dog along a pond that sits between the backyards of rows of houses in the community, when a 10-foot alligator suddenly emerged from the water.

The incident occurred shortly after noon. The alligator went after the elderly woman’s dog near the community retention pond at Spanish Lakes Fairways, a 55-plus community located roughly 67 miles north of West Palm Beach.

The dog’s owner tried to fight off the alligator after it grabbed the canine, residents told WPTV. Witnesses called 911.

Horrifying video captured before and after moments of alligator attack

As eighty-five-year-old Gloria Serge was attempting to protect her dog, the alligator knocked her over, then later pulled her by her foot into the water, according to the State Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, NBC News reported. The incident was captured in a terrifying video that shows the moments before and after the ferocious reptile dragged the woman to her death. The footage was obtained by Inside Edition.

The footage begins showing Gloria Serge standing alongside the pond with her small dog on a leash as the alligator surfaces nearby and approaches the octogenarian, the New York Post reported.

The woman moves away, but the alligator is too quick. She only managed to walk a few feet before the reptile scrambled out of the water and attempted to attack the dog.

Serge desperately tried to protect her pet from the massive jaws of the alligator. The 10-foot-long reptile lunged at the woman, knocking her down, then snatched her by her foot and pulled her into the water.

“There’s a woman in the lake!” neighbor Carole Thomas yelled into the phone to the 911 dispatcher. “The alligator’s got her! I think she’s gone. Oh my God!”

Thomas told Inside Edition she tried to use a pole to pull Serge to safety. “There is no way I could have gotten to her sooner.”

Authorities recovered the body of Gloria Serge from the pond and “contracted nuisance alligator trapper” who captured the reptile, estimated to weigh between 600-700 pounds, and euthanized the beast.

Still, the fish and wildlife commission said in a statement that serious injuries by alligators in the state of Florida are rare, CNN reported, while offering advice on “how to survive an alligator attack.”
