Stimulus Update: More Payments Coming and Why Some People Only Got Half

The IRS says that more stimulus checks are on the way and explain why some Americans only received half of the expected payment. Plus, how to check the status of your stimulus payment online.

IRS Announces Official Pay Date for Stimulus Payments

The Internal Revenue Service and the US Treasury announced this week that the next batch of economic impact payments will be issued this week, with an official pay date of Wednesday, March 24.

The payments are part of economic relief under President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which was signed into law earlier this month. Payments will come either as prepaid debit cards or paper checks.

“The IRS continues to send the third round of stimulus payments in record time,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement, USA Today reported. “Since this new set of payments will include more mailed payments, we urge people to carefully watch their mail for a check or debit card in the coming weeks.”

Going forward, additional payments will be released on a weekly basis, according to an official news release by the IRS. Last week, the agency sent out stimulus payments to more than 90 million Americans.

Why Are Some Americans Only Receiving Half of the Expected Payment Amount?

Some couples have reported that the stimulus payments they received fell short of the expected amounts that had been promised to Americans.

According to the terms of the latest stimulus plan, individuals with an adjusted gross income of $75,000 a year or less would receive a $1,400 economic impact payment, and couples with an adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less would receive $2,800, as well as an additional $1,400 for each dependent claimed on income tax forms.

According to the IRS, there are several reasons a refund payment could have money deducted, WSB-TV Atlanta reports. Among the issues could be state income tax debts, past-due child support, or other issues. WSB-TV also reported that some people have only received half even though the status report with the IRS shows they have sent the full payment.

The IRS recommends using the Get My Payment tool to check the status for both spouses (see link to IRS tool below).

The IRS has not fully or directly addressed the issue of partial payments on its website, only adding a statement: “Additional batches of payments will be sent in the coming weeks by direct deposit and through the mail as a check or debit card.”

How to Check the Status of Your Stimulus Payment

Americans can get a status update on when their next payment will be sent in the amount by using a free tool established online by the IRS.

You can access the “Get My Payment” tool through the IRS website.
