Manhunt Ends: Murder Suspect and Prison Guard Wife Captured

An 11-day, a multistate manhunt has ended, as Alabama murder suspect Casey White was captured with prison guard Vicky White, whom he referred to as his wife.

Murder Suspect and Prison Guard captured in Indiana

An 11-day manhunt for a murder suspect, and the Alabama prison guard who facilitated his escape, has ended with their capture in Indiana. The details of the how and the why of this unlikely scenario are still emerging.

Murder suspect Casey Cole White, 38, and Vicky White, 56, (no relation), a 17-year veteran and assistant director of corrections at the Lauderdale County detention Center in Florence, Alabama, were captured after a police chase ended in a crash.

Widespread news about the escape and a $15,000 reward led to a tip that identified the pair in Evansville, Indiana. Police officers conducting surveillance spotted Vicky exiting a hotel, wearing a wig and getting into a Cadillac with Casey. When the pair drove away, authorities pursued them, and a chase ensued, ending when a US Marshals Task Force member drove into their vehicle, causing the Cadillac to wreck and roll over, Newser reported.

Vicky was driving the Cadillac. At some point during the capture, she shot herself.

“We got Casey White out, who immediately announced that his wife had shot herself in the head and that he didn’t do it,” US Marshal Marty Keely told CNN, the New York Post reported.

According to the Vanderburgh County, Indiana, sheriff’s office, ABC reported, Vicky was hospitalized with severe injuries from the gunshot wound. She later died in the hospital from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Daily Mail reported.

Casey refers to Vicky as his wife

“When we were taking Casey White into custody, upon his surrender, he said, ‘Help my wife, she just shot herself,'” Commander Deputy U.S. Marshal Chad Hunt told ABC on Tuesday.

Vicky was facing a number of charges in addition to permitting and aiding and escape, most likely forgery and identity theft, Fox reported.

Details of the story are still emerging

It began on Friday, April 29, 2022, when Vicky was transporting murder suspect Casey Cole White, 38 (no relation), to the nearby courthouse for an alleged “mental health evaluation.”

Casey was charged with two counts of capital murder, something he had confessed to and pled not guilty because of insanity. He was already serving a 75-year sentence over the 2015 home invasion, carjacking, and police chase.

The pair left in a marked patrol vehicle but never arrived.

Vicky had put in for retirement and had sold her home just a week earlier for a reported $95,550, well below market value. Some colleagues had wondered if she was participating under some duress.

Suspicious from the start

Signs that something was not right should have been evident from the start. Vicky violated protocol by transporting Casey alone, which requires two sworn deputies to transport a prisoner with the type of charges he had.

A number of stories have emerged since their escape 12 days ago. Witnesses reported spotting Vicky at a sex store, as well as buying men’s clothes at a Kohl’s store a week before the couple escaped.

While higher-up officials initially expressed disbelief that Vicky was involved, later, other workers revealed that she had a “special relationship” with Casey for nearly two years.
