American women are officially declaring a “strike” by promising to practice abstinence. Their goal is to punish men for the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. However, critics point out one important irony of the strike.
Cold showers: Women declare abstinence strike
Following protests in cities all across America over the weekend, women are declaring to practice abstinence until federal-level protections for abortion rights are restored, which means men may not be getting any for quite a while.
The hashtag #SexStrike began trending on Twitter over the weekend. As thousands of protesters marched through New York City on Friday and Saturday, the Daily Mail reports, women carried signs reading: “No sex until we have abortion rights.”
On social media, pledges circulated calling on women to withhold sex from men “until abortion rights are federal law.” A nationwide sex strike has also been gaining momentum.
“Women of America: Take the pledge. Because SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade, we cannot take the risk of an unintended pregnancy, therefore, we will not have sex with any man — including our husbands — unless we are trying to become pregnant,” one user on Twitter wrote.
“That is our power,” another woman raged. “Women have the power here. No more sex until abortion rights are federal law.”
“#SexStrike. If our choices are denied, so are yours,” one graphic read.
Pro-life critics point out irony of abstinence strike
Some critics did point out the irony of what an abstinence strike would have on the issue of abortion, The Blaze reported.
“Do all these women who say they’re going on a sex strike realize that they’ve now solved their abortion problem?” one person wrote.
“Nicely done ladies!” another wrote. “Abstaining from sex prevents an unwanted pregnancy and abortion.”
“That moment when you realize if you go on #SexStrike you won’t need an abortion,” said yet another.
“To people tweeting this, your terms are acceptable,” another person declared. “We actually have no issue with you taking responsibility for once in your lives and not just having meaningless sex that ends with you taking an innocent human life.”
