McDonald’s Shamrock Shake returned on February 20, and if you haven’t heard, they’ve also released a second version of the minty, Irish-themed holiday treat with crushed Oreo cookies – the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry!

What is a Shamrock Shake?

The McDonald’s Shamrock Shake is a limited-time holiday dessert treat that McDonald’s has been offering for over 50 years since 1967, which began in commemoration of St. Patrick’s Day. It was started by a Connecticut McDonald’s owner and operator Hal Rosen, USA Today reports. Building on Rosen’s original concoction, McDonald’s introduced the Shamrock Shake as a limited-time menu option to other restaurants beginning in 1970.

Reportedly, the treat has only been available nationwide since 2012. However, some markets, such as California, have been lucky enough to have enjoyed the dessert treat annually since the 1970s.

A McDonald’s Shamrock Shake is a minty, Irish-themed holiday treat that starts with the company’s soft serve vanilla ice cream. It’s blended with McDonald’s Shamrock Shake syrup, the green-colored, artificially-flavored ingredient that gives the dessert its characteristic mint taste. The shake is finished off with a whipped-cream-like topping.

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry

A second version of the treat takes the McDonald’s McFlurry format by adding crushed Oreo cookies and the famous Shamrock Shake syrup, resulting in the aptly named “Oreo Shamrock McFlurry,” People reports.
