1.5 million YETI coolers recalled

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has initiated a recall of four types of 1.5 million YETI soft coolers over a safety issue with magnets that could become detached and pose a risk of death if ingested.

YETI recalls 1.5 million coolers

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall notice affecting four models of YETI soft coolers over a safety issue with enclosed magnets that can become attached and pose a risk of death if swallowed.

Each of the models has a main pocket closure that is lined with high-powered magnets. According to the CPSC, these enclosures can fail and result in the magnets detaching, which poses a risk of serious injury or death if ingested.

The CPSC warns that if the magnets are swallowed, they can attract one another or a metal object and become lodged in the digestive system. This can result in perforations to the intestines, potentially leading to blood poisoning and death.

Which models are affected?

The recall involves the YETI Hopper M30 Soft Cooler 1.0 and 2.0, Hopper M20 Soft Backpack Cooler, and SideKick Dry Gear Case.

The affected models were sold at Dick’s Sporting Goods, ACE Hardware, Academy Sports + Outdoors, YETI, and other stores nationwide and online at www.yeti.com and www.amazon.com from March 2018 to January 2023 for about $50 for the SideKick Dry Gear Case, $325 for the Hopper M20 Soft Backpack Cooler and between $300 and $350 for the Hopper M30 Soft Cooler 1.0 and 2.0.

How to get a full refund and $25 bonus

The CPSC says: “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products and contact YETI to receive a full refund or replacement product.”

YETI has set up a dedicated website for the recall that can be accessed here.

Visit the YETI recall page for instructions on how to return the product free of charge for the choice of a suggested replacement product of equal or greater value or a full refund in the form of a YETI gift card with an additional $25 value.
